The Shard SE1 Project

Back

The Shard SE1 Project protect area where the irrigation system was due to be upgraded and trees replaced.

The trees located near The Shard, known as honey locust trees, are noted for providing a natural, organic contrast to the modern, metallic architecture of the building. These trees, often featured in views from the surrounding area, and are noted for acting as a natural, green foreground element against the glass and steel of The Shard. They are often highlighted in artistic, photographic, or urban planning contexts to emphasize the balance between nature and, modernization in, London.

What we did

We were asked to quote for a hoarding installation, freestanding on concrete blocks to protect the area during the period of time duration of the work to be carried out.

The circumstances around the project were challenging as the work had to be carried out at night-time only, due to high volume of pedestrian activity during the day, and the complexity of installing the hoarding close to escalators, bus stops, traffic lights, lampposts etc.

The concrete blocks were delivered on the first night and placed directly onto strong pallets by Hiab and then transported into position by the team, using pallet trucks.

Once in place the team commenced with the construction of the framework to which the ply sheets would to be attached to. Solid timber pedestrian access doors with push pad emergency exit buttons and digital locks were installed as was a 5m vehicle access gate for teams carrying out the work to enter and exit securely.  Once all aspects of the hoarding were in place, the trim was added. All our timber had been painted offsite in our warehouse prior too installation.  The reason for this was to preserve the surface of the area from any accidental spillage and the fact that it would be virtually impossible to see to paint the hoarding or for it to dry overnight.
